Our Curriculum
An Introduction to our Curriculum
At Brynhyfryd Primary School, our curriculum is continuously reviewed and improved. It is a flexible plan that helps our children grow and learn every day. We are always looking for ways to make it even better, because we know that a great education is a journey of continuous improvement.
We work within the framework of the Curriculum for Wales. This gives us clear, legal guidelines to follow, ensuring we provide a high-quality education that is both consistent and forward-thinking. Think of it as a roadmap: it shows us where we need to go, but we have the flexibility to choose the best and most engaging paths for our pupils.
Our commitment is to your child. We want them to become confident, happy learners who are ready for the future. By following these guidelines and constantly improving our approach, we can provide a learning environment that is both structured and full of creativity.

Progression in our Curriculum
Building a Strong Foundation
We design our curriculum so that every child builds on what they already know. Think of it like building a house: we make sure the foundations are strong and secure before we add the next layer. This means we focus on both the depth of learning (making sure they truly understand a topic) and the breadth (covering a wide range of subjects).
We also work closely with our local cluster schools to ensure that your child's journey is smooth from start to finish. We all agree on the key things children should learn and we have worked within our cluster to develop progression maps to help us with our planning and ensure consistency.
Assessment
In Brynhyfryd, we use a range of assessments to measure pupil progress and inform next steps in learning.
We use a range of different strategies and tools to help us understand how our children are making progress.
Assessment arrangements include:
• On-entry assessment
• Day to day formative assessment
• Understanding group progress
• A shared understanding of the principles of progression
• Pupil progress meetings
• A range of standardised assessments
• Personalised assessments
• Parent/carer involvement
Religion, Values & Ethics
Religion, Values and Ethics education enables children to experience and understand their rights. These include their human rights to freedom of religious thought and conscience, their rights to cultural participation and their right to their own identity.
Relationships & Sexuality Education
Relationships and sexuality education in mandatory and is considered as part of the Health and Well-Being area of learning, as well as being a cross cutting theme across all learning.
